A small separate rechargeable coin like battery that was just to keep the clock going. Normally, they should last a least a few weeks to a few months if the main battery is dead. If the main battery is dead I've had mine work fine 6mo+ later. From Scotland UK the EU variant SDS200E was chosen and purchased from Lynch and Sons.
