Maybe it is related to the fuel pump. Turn the key to the "On" position for a few seconds while the fuel pump runs (can hear it in some GM vehicles- I haven't noticed it in the Malibu) to let it build up pressure, then over the Start. The cam sensor especially and it is located on top rear of engine where critters like to harbor.
